Meet Michael

Michael Cook is an award-winning political consultant and the founder of Cook Consulting, Arkansas’s leading firm for Democratic campaign strategy. A veteran of public policy, public relations, and politics, Michael has extensive experience in state government and has guided dozens of successful campaigns across the state.

For three election cycles in a row, possibly a record, Cook Consulting has won more races than any other Democratic consulting firm in Arkansas. Michael has built a reputation for winning tough, high-stakes races and pulling off major upsets. A columnist for the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette once described him as a “hard-edged consultant,” a title he has earned through consistent results in competitive elections.

Michael helped lead the Arkansas Scholarship Lottery campaign, a statewide ballot initiative approved by voters in 2008. He managed Bill Halter’s victorious campaign for lieutenant governor in 2006, the first Democratic win for that office in 16 years, and later served as Halter’s chief of staff.

From 2001 to 2005, Michael served as executive director of the Democratic Party of Arkansas, where he revitalized and reorganized party operations. His leadership earned national attention. In 2003, the National Journal’s Hotline named him one of Arkansas’s Rising Stars. In 2004, the Arkansas Times dubbed him the “Wizard of Voter Turnout” for his work as state director of the Kerry-Edwards Coordinated Campaign.

In addition to his political work, Michael serves as the film critic for KLRT-TV and KARK-TV. He is a "tomato-meter approved critic" on Rotten Tomatoes and Arkansas’s only member of the Critics Choice Association. His former blog, Cook's Outlook, was named by the Washington Post as one of the best political blogs in Arkansas. His writing has appeared in national media outlets, and he is a past contributing writer for Talk Business.

Michael was named to Arkansas Business’s “40 Under 40” list and is a graduate of Leadership Greater Little Rock, Class XXIV. He is a veteran of the U.S. Army Reserves, holds a degree in history from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, and volunteers with the Little Rock School District’s Arkansas Scholars Program.
